Ord Street
Craftsman to the sidewalk, modern to the back wall. New-construction residence in San Francisco, completed 2013 with architect Philip Mathews.
The exterior carries ebonized cedar shingles and proportions that read as period-appropriate from the sidewalk. Inside, rift-sawn oak runs across the floor plane and pairs with custom steel-and-glass railing details that pull the interior firmly into contemporary territory.
The transition is intentional. The house is permitted, sized, and detailed to belong on its block; the interior is designed for how a modern family actually lives. Ord Street remains a useful reference for hybrid traditional-exterior, modern-interior San Francisco builds.
